December 10th. 2013, NYC: Today, three months after choosing to learn to code over $100 dollars, Leo Grand is launching his mobile application Trees for Cars on iOS and Android. Available for $0.99 cents, the mobile application aims to save the environment by helping users carpool to their destinations. Revenue from the app goes to Grand to continue to develop the application.
Among similar products, Trees for Cars uniquely provides information on how much CO2 the user is saving with each ride which further encourages environmental awareness and creates a healthy competition amongst users to save the most CO2. Grand has already started work on Trees for Cars 2 with additional features and functionality but believes Trees for Cars is the ideal foundation for his future endeavors to take cars off the road.
In addition to decreasing greenhouse gases, Grand suggests the app is a tool for community building by allowing people to connect with other riders and drivers as Trees for Cars users. “It’s a great way to build relationships, strengthen communities, help each-other financially and energy wise, all under the umbrella of saving the environment” said Grand with a smile.
Using Trees for Cars is very simple with only four options to fill out. As a driver, simply pick a meeting address and Trees for Cars will suggest nearby riders near that address. Each rider and driver are only connected if they choose to accept each-others invitation.
Grand began building Trees for Cars after Noodle.org Engineer, Patrick McConlogue offered him a choice, “$100 dollars or the opportunity to learn to code.” After choosing to code, for two months Patrick worked with him for one hour every morning. Realizing Grand's commitment, Patrick asked his boss to let him take off 30 days to teach Grand full time. Every day, including weekends, the two worked 8 to 12 hours and amidst the energy cans, coffee cups, and snack wrappers Leo Grand is launching his first app having written every line of code in the app. Since then more then 45,000 people have followed the story on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/journeymanchallenge) For more background information please watch this piece by CNN (http://goo.gl/xOIvSm)
Trees for Cars will be available in the Apple App Store and the Google Play store, compatible with most major devices including iPhone, and iPad and other tablet devices. Powered by APIs from Google Maps and Mapquest, Trees for Cars will work in countries where these services are supported.
